I enjoyed reading your 10 steps. I am sandwiched between two neighbors who maintain the greenest and thickest lawns on the street. To the south it is the basic industrial routine including “weed and feed” and to the north its chemlawn. I have a reasonably green lawn. I will not use weed and feed because I like purple johnny jump ups and spring crocus plus hyacinths and daffodils that grow right in the lawn. In spring I mow around the patch and cut high with a line trimmer later so the bulbs can strengthen after flowering. Clover is not a weed in my lawn.
My lawn produces a constant supply of organic material for the compost and some mulch.
I know that if I could set up an automatic sprinkler valves my yard would improve too.
As far as gas powered yard tools like mowers, trimmers and others I think they will out live our cars.
A car uses fuel to move as small house (the car) to where ever we want to go but these small engines are turned only to the important back breaking work they replace. They can run on methyl or ethyl alcohol and can be converted to run on wood gas too. A gallon of gas used in a garden is far more worthwhile than most trips that cars are used for after all how much does a car contribute to greening the suburbs?
Sad to say rather than meeting the challenge of sequestering carbon and cooling our hot cities some planners and some neighbors are simply abandoning our suburb to droughty bare rock and brown summer lawns while still draining the spring rains with curb and gutter.
